THE Zimbabwe Informal Traders Council (ZITC) has criticised the Harare City Council for collecting money from informal traders, while neglecting them.
ZITC, an umbrella organisation for informal traders’ associations with 65 affiliated groups across Zimbabwe, has been producing profiles of informal markets in Harare, including Glen Lorne and Hatcliffe, where there is a shortage of markets.
ZITC hopes to create more formalised markets, working with the Government, independent funders and local authorities.
ZITC secretary general, Robert Mutyasira, said they had been touring various informal markets in Harare.
“Right now, we are in the process of profiling our current informal markets in Harare,” he said.
“We are trying to discover and expose the conditions which informal traders are operating under.
“We are documenting the various conditions and challenges which the traders are operating under and the interventions which could be staged either by the local authority, the Government or our different independent funders,” he said.
Mutyasira said informal traders contributed immensely to the economy.
