A group of young creatives in Bulawayo is moving to redefine ibhikiri by transforming it into a vibrant, structured creative hub for artists while challenging negative perceptions attached to such spaces.

The initiative will be officially launched at a Youth Day celebration on February 21 at eLangeni Garden in Bulawayo. Gates open at midday with activities running throughout the day. The event is open to all ages until 6PM, after which entry will be restricted to those aged 18 and above.

Event organiser Mthokozisi “Mzee ka Sigola” Sigola said the goal is to reposition ibhikiri from being seen solely as a drinking spot to a centre for performance and cultural development.
“We want to intentionally reposition ibhikiri as a creative hub. This is about creating structured, safe platforms for young people to showcase their talent and changing how the community views these spaces. It’s about long-term cultural growth, not just a one-day celebration,” he said.

Commonly understood as informal open social spaces often associated with alcohol abuse, ibhikiri venues carry stigma. Sigola said eLangeni Garden was chosen for its accessibility and potential to host organised cultural activities.
“We’re deliberately investing in improving how the space is used to prove it can host meaningful events,” he said.

The event will feature performances from Bulawayo and Harare-based artists including Msiz’kay, Nk9 Bway, Kimoe, Skhumz Moonwalker, maNike and Ras Tekken. The programme will be hosted by Preacher The Cardinal King.

Sigola said the lineup was selected based on each artiste’s impact, professionalism and connection with young audiences.
“Bulawayo artistes often say they are left behind. We want to give them the platform to lead, restore confidence and build visibility,” he said.

Beyond entertainment, organisers believe the initiative can stimulate economic activity by creating earning opportunities for artists and vendors while offering structured entertainment for the community.
“There is stigma around ibhikiri spaces, often summed up by the phrase ‘yikutshonela amasese’. Through structure, security, age control and creative programming, we are challenging that perception,” Sigola added.

The long-term vision is to establish ibhikiri as a recurring creative hub for Bulawayo youth through consistent programming and partnerships.
“We want this to be sustainable, something that lasts beyond a single event,” he said.
