The fourth edition of the Youth Cultural Arts Festival roars to life tomorrow in Masvingo with a number of cultural activities lined up. Musicians such as Shinsoman, Jibilika dance group,Uncle Jaunda and a number of local dance groups are expected to perform at the event. Artistic director of the event Leeroy Gono said all is set for the festival that will end on August 2.
Running under the theme “I am an Artist” the festival will have popular artist Albert Nyati as one of the judges.
“Masvingo is at full throttle preparing for the fete and there is a general feeling of expectation and excitement.
“‘I am an Artist’ is the word going around the suburbs of Masvingo, in Mucheke, Rujeko, Rhodene, Yeukai and from as far afield as Bikita, Gutu, Mashava and Chiredzi.
“It seems like all the artists have been waiting for their opportunity to shine, to be recognised and treated with the respect that they deserve,” he said.
Gono said it was vital to come up with such a theme that recognises creativity.
“Creativity like any other ability must be noticed and nurtured to bloom. Our festival plays a large role in recognising and providing opportunities for creative talent to be expressed.
“Arts are not just important but they are a central force in human existence and it is time artists were compensated fairly, consistently and honourably.”
Some of the schools expected to take part in this year’s festival include the defending champions Pamushana High School, Thornhill, Mucheke, Masvingo Christian College, Churchill, Mapanzure, Serima, Hippo Valley, Mapakomhere, Silveira and Glen View 1 High.
Since its launch, the festival has been instrumental in bringing young people together and giving them a voice that resonates with their being.
