MORE than 500 youths representing all provinces at the Zimbabwe National Youths Games thronged Mutare Hall for the youth edutainment programme held on Wednesday. Edutainment is an important component of the Zimbabwe National Youth Games that seeks to build on the character of the athletes The Games patron and Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Mandi Chimene and Minister of Youth, Indigenisation and Empowerment, Christopher Mushohwe were among invited guests graced the event which was held under the theme: “Transforming lives through Sport”.
The edutainment sector general manager, Abraham Mdefi, said: “The event is mainly done to facilitate dissemination of vital information to youth and adult facilitators to enable the teaching of life skills and to facilitate youth leadership development.
“It also aims at creating opportunities for youth sport participants to exchange experiences and insights regarding their participation in sport and recreation activities.”
He also said bringing together practitioners, organisations and other agents in a common alliance to drive the youth development agenda forward was another aim of the edutainment programme.
To this end, provinces were implored to support teams and participants to undertake edutainment activities during provincial camps.
Each province was allocated 10 minutes within which they made their presentation whose introductory part was involving a traditional dance or song reflecting cultural dynamics of their respective provinces.
This was mainly done to blend sports with culture through artistic expression.
The best three provinces that displayed their plays very well walked away with trophies and other prices which were not disclosed.
Speaking on behalf of Mutare mayor, Tatenda Nhamarare, senior environmental health officer, Eunice Muyambuki, said youths were the majority in Zimbabwe and play critical roles in the society, hence they need strong support.
“Youths play a critical role in our society and in our case as Zimbabwe, they are the majority. They, however, need every support. I also urge youths to help to keep our environments clean,” said Muyambuki.
