THE recently appointed director-general of the Sport and Recreation Allan Mavunga has described the Zimbabwe National Youth Games as a very important part of the sports ecosystem of the country.
Mavunga took over last month from Eltah Nengomasha who quit the government sport regulating body in September.
He has embarked on a nationwide tour of the provinces, getting feedback from sports practitioners and also sharing his vision of which infrastructure, digitization, commercialisation of sport are key drivers. Inclusivity will also be among those as the country has taken a lead in advancing sport for people with disabilities.
Mavunga was a member of the Bulawayo Metropolitan Games team of 2003 the year the development initiative was launched with the city the hosts.
He went on to captain the Zimbabwe team.
Mavunga gave a personal account how he ended up in the United States on a scholarship because of basketball and the Youth Games, a platform for talent to get to the next level.
He said the Games changed his life and that of his family.
