Youth Olympic Games a success: Jacques Rogge

The Games saw over 1 000 athletes, between the ages of 15 to 18 from 70 countries, taking part and Morocco won the first medal for Africa at a Winter Olympic event when Adam Lamhamedi won a gold medal in the men’s super – G Alpine Skiing.
Rogge said the success of the event has established a strong foundation for future youth games.
“By all measures, the first Winter Youth Olympic Games exceeded expectations and established a solid foundation for future youth games.
“We are indebted to the Games organisers and to many volunteers who worked so hard to ensure the success of this inaugural event.
“We have seen some remarkable athletic performances during the high-level competition at these Games,” said Rogge.
Rogge was impressed with the participation of the athletes in the Culture and Education Programme (CEP) designed to help educate the young athletes on how to live by the Olympic values both on and off the field of play.
“We have been inspired by your conduct, not only on the snow and ice but also during the Culture and Education Programme.
“You embody the Olympic values of excellence, respect and friendship. More than anyone you are responsible for the success of the Games. By earning the title Young Olympian, you are role models for generation. And no matter what happens in your sports career from this point, all of you are equipped to become future leaders.
“The legacy of the first Youth Olympic Games lives in you and in all people of all ages who have been touched by your good example,” said Rogge.
Germany finished on top with 17 medals (eight gold, seven silver and two bronze) while China followed with 15 medals (seven gold, four silver and four bronze) and the hosts Austria amassed 13 medals (six gold, four silver and three bronze).
The Youth Olympic Games are a sporting event for young people balancing sport, culture and education.
These Games work as a catalyst in these fields through the Olympic Movement.
The Games became a reality in 2010 at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore with 204 countries out of 205 National Olympic Committees taking part and Innsbruck 2012 Games marked the introduction of the winter edition.
