Youth portfolio now under Kazembe

GOVERNMENT has transferred the Department of Youth Affairs to the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation under Minister Kazembe Kazembe.

The department was previously under the Ministry of Women and Youth Affairs, which is headed by Minister Sithembiso Nyoni.

Officiating at the Fourth Edition of the Makonde Senator’s Sporting Tournament in Chinhoyi at the weekend, the ministry’s director of sport development and promotion, Mrs Eugania Chidhakwa, said the department was merged last week.

“I am happy to announce that with effect from last week, our ministry is now being called Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation.

“This was arrived at after our superiors saw it fit to merge our previous ministry with the Department of Youths,” said Mrs Chidhakwa.

“The sporting and recreational activities will be made easy with the inclusion of youths in the ministry as they are active enough,” she said.

It is believed that youths recently made representations to President Mnangagwa that it was not ideal to merge them with the women’s department.

“Youths complained about their attachment to the Department of Women, which they said would overshadow them,” said a source who is privy to the development.
