Zaba technical director Petros Masiyambumbi said they will use the event as part of their selection process and preparations for the Olympic qualifiers scheduled for Casablanca, Morocco, from April 27 to May 6.
There were allegations that the national association was set to send four boxers from the United Kingdom for the qualifiers.
“Currently we are hoping to send six boxers for the qualifiers and, among them, is Simbarashe Mhondiwa who is based in the United Kingdom,” said Musiyambumbi.
“He sent us his profile and we think it’s necessary to include him in the team. He has his own resources to travel to Morocco. Definitely for the Morocco event we are assured to send a team to represent the nation.
“Bulawayo province will host a tournament this month and it’s part of our preparations for the Olympic qualifiers. Invitations have already been sent to all provinces and we expect everyone to participate.
“It will also be part of selecting a team for Morocco. We want to be very open so that we give an opportunity to those who did not participate in the national championships and the Champion of Champions last year.”
Masiyambumbi said there was need to expose their team to higher levels of competition if they are to make an impact on the international scene.
