The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) is confident of securing convictions of people who were arrested for corruption.
ZACC was mandated to investigate corruption and complement Government’s war against graft.
On Friday, Vice President Kembo Mohadi swore in another commissioner, Mrs Mabel Ndakaripa Hungwe, who was not present when others took oath of office in July.
Speaking on the sidelines of the function, ZACC chairperson Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo said a number of people have been arrested and were awaiting trial.
“A number of people have been arrested and some have been given trial dates. The dockets are ready and we are just awaiting for those dates to see what happens in the courts, but we are quite confident that we will be able to secure convictions this time around,” she said.
Justice Matanda-Moyo said she was happy with the way Government was working with the commission.
“Government has been very cooperative and supportive of ZACC. We were given a budget and we are mobilising resources.
“We are in the process of procuring resources. Our officers are undergoing some trainings, and we are quite happy about it,” she said.
On former Minister of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Prisca Mupfumira, Justice Matanda-Moyo said now that her 21 days of detention were over, she could apply for bail.
“When the former minister was arrested, the Prosecutor-General issued a certificate for her detention for 21 days, and the effect of that certificate is that once it is given, then the accused person cannot apply for bail for the next 21 days. So the Supreme Court has simply confirmed that position, and the Supreme Court has also said the procedure, which was used to approach the High Court, was not the correct procedure and neither was the procedure used to approach the Supreme Court the correct procedure.
“As ZACC, we are quite excited because we are a commission which is following the law and we confirmed that the law was followed by ZACC and the Prosecutor-General in handling the matter. The former minister can now go back and apply for bail since the 21 days are over,” she said.
