Scores of people from Masvingo Province, especially from Zaka District, converged at Dzoro High School recently to celebrate the appointment of Air Marshal John Jacob Nzvede as Commander Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ).

President Mnangagwa appointed Air Marshal Nzvede to the AFZ Commander’s position following the retirement of former Commander Air Marshal Elson Moyo this year.

Retired Air Marshal Moyo attended the celebration.

There was a lot of entertainment, with the AFZ Band putting up a memorable performance that charmed the crowd.

Later on, an all-night musical gala was held, with a number of artistes including Andy Muridzo, performing, much to the excitement of the crowds.

Guests at the event included Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira, Minister of State for Presidential Affairs in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Lovemore Matuke, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Deputy Minister Davis Marapira, Zanu PF Masvingo provincial chairperson Cde Rabson Mavhenyengwa, Zaka South legislator Cde Clemence Chiduwa and Chief Bota.

They participated in a tree-planting at Dzoro High School before presiding over the inauguration of a fish pond.

The celebrations, which brought together family, friends and colleagues, were held at the school grounds. Air Marshal Nzvede was described by many as resilient, determined, hardworking and ambitious man, who underwent military training in Mozambique before being deployed to the war front during the liberation struggle.

He later received specialised flight training in Romania.

In his remarks, Air Marshal Nzvede called for discipline, determination and loyalty. He emphasised that young people should strive to be upright citizens, abstain from drug and substance abuse and focus on their studies to achieve greatness and have inspiring stories of success.

Minister Chadzamira hailed Air Marshal Nzvede’s exemplary leadership and contribution to the liberation struggle.

“We feel honoured and humbled as Masvingo Province and in particular, Zaka District, for this gesture and consideration,” he said.

“The appointment is a testament of Cde Nzvede’s astute leadership, dependability, loyalty, determination and commitment to serve our country and in the defence and security establishment.

“I am thankful to the Nzvede family, for giving to the nation an upright son and leader, who has contributed immensely to our armed liberation struggle and today, has availed himself to lead one of our national strategic defence establishments, the Air Force of Zimbabwe.”

Minister Chadzamira challenged young people from Masvingo Province and Zaka District in particular, to emulate to Air Marshal Nzvede and other military commanders.

The AFZ and other defence forces, have spearheaded several developmental projects across Masvingo Province, said Minister Chadzamira.

They have constructed classroom blocks and clinics, in keeping with the ongoing devolution and decentralisation agenda aimed at ensuring community-led development.

“True to the saying that our defence system comes from the people and that it is people-centric, our development mantra of leaving ‘No one and no place behind’ is growing in our rural areas.

“Here in Zaka, and in particular in the resettlement areas, the Air Force of Zimbabwe played an instrumental role in the construction and subsequent opening of Gudo Clinic,” he said.

The intervention is expected to go a long way in ensuring access to quality health, while guaranteeing the achievement of universal health coverage.
