Girls at Zaka District’s marginalised schools have called for equal opportunities.
They expressed concern over the disparities they face when compared to their urban counterparts, and emphasised the
importance of equal education opportunities between boys and girls.
During a visit to Vhudzi Primary School in the Zaka, the girls highlighted the lack of basic amenities like water and sanitation in
the district.
They said their school’s limited resources pose significant challenges for girls during their menstrual cycles.
Vhudzi Primary School head, Mr Peter Hwezva said the WASH programme in schools has benefited the girlchild.
“The girlchild was mainly affected and some were not coming to school once they start menstruating,” he said.
“This affected the passrate for girls. I am glad that the situation has impoved and the girlchild is now doing very well,” he said.
The WASH programme, funded by KwF Development Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary
Education in collaboration with UNICEF, has made a significant impact on the district’s schools.
The programme has improved access to water and sanitation, benefiting the girls in particular.
