The Zimbabwe Netball select side, now christened the Zambezi Eagles, open their campaign at the Telkom Netball League (TNL) Power Week One this afternoon, taking on Flames in their opening clash with Captain Sharon Bwanali upbeat about their prospects.

Made up of senior national team players and promising juniors, the team is part of a broader push by the Zimbabwe Netball Association to lay an early foundation ahead of the 2027 Netball World Cup. Power Week One bursts into life this morning at the Sun City Superbowl in South Africa’s North West Province and runs until May 4.

“Everyone is geared up,” said Bwanali.

“This is a select side, so there are more young players. I think we are just a few senior players in the team, so we are here to encourage them to show them that netball is the same, whether at senior or junior level.

“We are expecting to win our games that will show us whether we’re on the right track ahead of the World Cup qualifiers next year.”

The Zimbabwean side joins 16 South African clubs vying for domestic ranking points, along with the Spar Baby Proteas South Africa’s Under-21 side preparing for the Netball World Youth Cup later this year. Both the Zambezi Eagles and the Baby Proteas are participating as guest teams in the form of friendly matches. The TNL is South Africa’s premier domestic netball competition, and Bwanali believes it offers invaluable exposure for Zimbabwe’s rising talent.

“More young players are being groomed to be part of the team for the World Cup qualifiers.

“So, I’m sure we’re expecting to win to boost our confidence for that journey.

“From what I’ve seen, these young players aren’t bad. Sometimes, when you play with seniors, you might feel intimidated at first but we’re here to guide and uplift them. They’re good.

“And it’s very important that they get this exposure. Some of the players in the Telkom League are part of the South Africa national team so I’m sure the experience will rub off on them,” said Bwanali.

The team is under the guidance of Gems head coach Ropafadzo Mutsauki, who is equally hopeful the players will rise to the occasion.
