VICTORIA Falls-based Zambezi Lions were the biggest winners in the Zifa Matabeleland North Division Two league over the weekend as they roared to a 5-1 victory over visiting Kamandama Celtics at Chinotimba Stadium. Lions have been an average side for the better part of the season but on this memorable afternoon they turned visiting Celtics into a huge afternoon feast with goals from Ishmael Munsaka and Prinsisco Mabena who both grabbed a brace each before Emmediator Mabhena’s effort completed the rout.
James Munsaka scored a solitary goal for Kamandama Celtics.
Away from Zambezi Lions’ super display, Makomo FC’s quest to play in the Zifa Southern Region Division One league next year looks done and dusted after the side were last week awarded three points for the abandoned match against bitter rivals Amagagasi on August 3, 2014 at GVZ Stadium to go seven points clear at the summit.
The David Sibanda chaired Zifa Mat North disciplinary committee ruled that a section of unruly Amagagasi fans had caused the abandonment of the blood and thunder clash which was tied at 1-1 with eleven minutes left.
Makomo then took advantage of the positive boardroom decision by hammering hapless Iwisa 3-0 at the Sports Pavilion on Saturday with goals coming from Evidence Nyapiya, Barnabas Mudimbu and Lawrence Khumbula.
This was Tafi Nengasha coached Iwisa’s fourth loss on the trot after similar batterings by Vic Falls Tigers 4-0, Classic Luyando 4-1 and Hwange Under-17 3-0 to concede a hefty fourteen goals and score only once.
Amagagasi’s spirits were not dampened as they squeezed a vital 1-0 win over stubborn Baobab Rovers at Chinotimba Stadium with Godknows Sibanda’s brilliant effort making a huge difference.
Tazvivinga Gweme coached ZRP Hwange’s hopes of chasing Amagagasi for the second point suffered a huge knock as they drew 1-1 with fellow uniformed forces outfit Prison Eagles. Tendai Mathe scored for the policemen with the wardens replying through Eric Sibanda.
Hwange side Blackrock travelled to Vic Falls and came back with smiles after edging Corinthians 4-3 in a seven goal thriller at Chinotimba Stadium.
Blessed Njekwa (brace), Clifford Phiri and Frank Ncube’s strikes ensured Blackrock halted a three-match losing streak which left bulky coach Tichaona Mfandaedza celebrating as if he had won the league title.
Antony Sibanda, Lesley Mulenga and Prime Sibanda’s goals could not pull the game out of the fire for the battling Corinthians.
At the Colliery Stadium, the vastly improved Hwange Under-17 side edged Ingagula 1-0 courtesy of a strike by Casper Sibanda.
In the only match on Sunday, army team Motomoto and Brazil shared the spoils in an exciting 1-1 draw at Sports Pavilion.
Shaibar Dimingu hit the target for the soldiers while Brazil’s Morestuff Ncube replied for the Makwika-based outfit.
