Zambia will host the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) Heads of State Summit, which aims to harness the region’s natural capital and cultural heritage for inclusive socio-economic development.

The summit, scheduled for May 31, will be running under the theme “Leveraging KAZA’s natural capital and cultural heritage resources as catalysts for inclusive socio-economic development of the eco-region.”

It marks a major milestone as KAZA takes stock of its progress since the establishment of the TFCA in 2011.

KAZA comprises Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. Heads of State from the four nations are expected to attend the summit and take stock of developments in the region.

“As we approach the summit, Zambia, the KAZA coordinating and host country for the event, is currently hosting a briefing on the summit,” said the KAZA statement.

KAZA TFCA is the second largest nature and landscape conservation area in the world, spanning the international borders of five countries in Southern Africa.

It includes a major part of the upper Zambezi River and Okavango basins and delta, the Caprivi Strip of Namibia, the southeastern part of Angola, southwestern Zambia, the northern wildlands of Botswana and western Zimbabwe.

The centre of this area is at the confluence of the Zambezi and Chobe Rivers where the borders of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe converge.

It incorporates a number of notable national parks and nature sites, including Chobe, Hwange and the Victoria Falls.

The region is home to a population of approximately 250 000 animals including the largest population of African elephants in the world.
