ZPWMA public relations manager Ms Carol Washaya-Moyo said the poacher who is believed to be aged 50 was shot dead at Bimbi 4 by a group of about 16 rangers who were following a spoor of the poachers they had picked.
She said the poacher was the second to be shot in the space of a week by parks rangers as the authority intensifies war against poaching.
“The following were recovered at the scene of the shootout: 14 pairs of ivory tusks, cell phone with two Zambian lines and cooking pots,” said Ms Washaya-Moyo.
She said in less than a week, the authority had recovered 36 ivory tusks from the two contacts they made with the Zambian poachers.
“A total of 36 ivory tusks have been recovered, 67 rounds of ammunition, an AK rifle, 375 rifle and one round, cell phone with two Zambian lines and cooking pots in less than a week,” said Ms Washaya-Moyo.
“The authority wants to continue to warn would-be poachers that illegal entry into parks estates for the purposes of hunting illegally is suicidal.”
Last week, George Chingandu of Ben Chingandu homestead, Chief Sekute, Mondiya village, Kazungula, Zambia, was seriously injured after he was shot twice by parks rangers working in conjunction with the police between Zambezi Camp and Katombora on the Zimbabwean side.
Chingandu, believed to be in his 30s, is in intensive care at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo.
