Zanu-PF has condemned the recent petrol-bombing of its supporters and assault of others in Epworth by thugs believed to belong to MDC-T.
In a statement on Friday, Zanu-PF spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo said the attacks violated Section 52 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to personal security and freedom from all forms of violence.
“We are particularly disturbed by the petrol-bombing of Cde Bishton Kucherana, who is Zanu-PF’s acting vice-secretary for Domboramwari district. These renewed acts of violence by members of the MDC-T are also inimical to our well-known culture of peace and tolerance and are a blatant contradiction of President Mugabe’s constant call for peace in Zimbabwe,” Cde Gumbo said.
He said Zimbabweans deserved much better than senseless, sadistic behaviour, which also gave the peace-loving country a bad name.
“Accordingly, we call on (MDC-T leader) Mr (Morgan) Tsvangirai to commit himself and his party to democratic means of pursuing politics, not just in words but in actions and to halt all acts of violence against political opponents forthwith.
“Mr Tsvangirai must call on his party supporters to refrain from violent behaviour, exercise restraint and respect the basic human rights of all citizens,” Cde Gumbo said.
He said violence was not an acceptable method of resolving differences, saying civilised parties engaged in dialogue and exchange of ideas.
Eight MDC-T activists have been arrested in connection with assaulting Zanu-PF supporters in Epworth.
