Zanu-PF has come up with preliminary guidelines in Masvingo to be used in the election of the chairperson of the provincial council with reports that the revolutionary party wanted all the seven administrative districts in the province to be represented in the new council. The provincial council, a new tier of provincial government, would replace the office of the provincial governor that was scrapped under the new constitution.
Out of the 10 members elected to the provincial council in Masvingo, Zanu-PF has seven while the MDC-T holds the remainder.
The chairperson of the council would be voted for by fellow council members.
Zanu-PF provincial chairman Cde Lovemore Matuke yesterday said the revolutionary party wanted one of the seven elected councillors to become provincial council chairman with his or her slot set to be filled by co-opting a candidate from districts that were not represented in the body.
Cde Matuke said only Zaka and Mwenezi districts did not have representatives in the provincial council hence plans to co-opt a candidate from these two districts.
“Since the provincial council will be like a provincial government, we want a situation where all the seven administrative districts are represented in the body.
“We will be pushing for the chairperson to be elected from our seven council members and open up an additional slot for us to be able to co-opt a candidate from either Mwenezi or Zaka,’’ he said.
