Harare councillors’ installation deferred

THE installation of Harare councillors and the election of the mayor for the city which was set for yesterday have been deferred indefinitely.
Councillors were last week told to come to Town House for their installation but they were yesterday advised that the event had been postponed to a later date.

Hatcliffe ward 42 councillor-elect, Naboth Munyengera (Zanu PF) said they were told by Zanu-PF Harare Province that the event was postponed.
“The installation has been postponed and we will be advised on the date. I think the reason is that we are burying our heroes on Thursday and on Saturday,” he said.

Glen Norah councillor-elect Herbert Gomba (MDC-T) also confirmed that the installation had been postponed indefinitely.
“There was no official comment from council but I think it is because there is no cabinet, minister and also the town clerk who swears in councillors is travelling to China on council business,” he said.

MDC-T councillor for Ward 14 in Kambuzuma, Thomas Muzuva who was chosen as the party’s choice for deputy mayor said they had received letters inviting them to council with an agenda of selecting a mayor and deputy mayor for Harare.

Council spokesperson Mr Leslie Gwindi said: “A new date will be announced in due course there are a lot of things which have to be implemented.”
MDC-T selected Harare lawyer Mr Obert Gutu to become the new mayor for Harare.
