Zanu PF is confident of winning two by-elections in Chimanimani East Ward 16 and Makorokoro in Matabeleland South today.
The party’s National Political Commissar Cde Victor Matemadanda said on Thursday that the ruling party was going to claim the two wards. Cde Matemadanda said Zanu PF had been drumming up support, while the opposition were busy fighting each other on social media.
“We are winning the by-elections this weekend and there is no doubt about that,” he said.
“We expect to win resoundingly in both Manicaland Ward 16 and in Makorokoro, Matabeleland South.
“Unlike the opposition MDC which is spending their time fighting each other on social media, we are on the ground and working hard to deliver.”
Zanu PF’s Manicaland provincial chairperson Cde Mike Madiro said all was set for the by-election in Chimanimani.
The seat, which covers areas such as Gwindingwi, Silverstream and Duri fell vacant after the death of Cde Tendai Nyabaya. Cde Madiro said he was optimistic party candidate Cde Charles Chinamira will win.
“We are definitely going to romp to victory and we want to make sure we get most of the votes,” he said.
“Our candidate, Cde Charles Chinamira, has promised the people effective representation through development in line with Government’s devolution thrust.
“The ward was affected by Cyclone Idai and so we are going to be making sure there is infrastructural development, with school blocks and clinics, as well as the resuscitation of road infrastructure.”
Cde Madiro said the party had been mobilising supporters to avoid voter apathy.
“We are hoping that apathy does not affect the turnout and the party is making sure that this does not affect the by-election on Saturday.”
Matabeleland South provincial chair Cde Rabelani Choeni said the party’s candidate, Cde Ontibile Ndlovu, was pro-development and prepared to take up Government’s thrust on devolution, which was all the people in the constituency were yearning for.
“The by-election is on as expected and Zanu PF is going to win because we have been moving around drumming-up support,” he said.
“Our candidate Cde Ontibile Ndlovu is for development and seeing out the building of schools and clinics around the ward.
“It will help the people, including the upgrading of roads so that children have easy access to schools.”
