ZANU-PF has launched massive onslaught in constituencies held by MDC formations since 2000 with rallies in Matabeleland North and South provinces spearheaded by the revolutionary party’s National Chairman Cde Simon Khaya Moyo and Secretary for Economic Affairs, Dr Obert Mpofu attracting huge crowds.
Cde Khaya Moyo, a member of the Zanu-PF Presidium, has since Friday held seven successful rallies out of more than 20, which he is billed to address in Matabeleland South.
Cde Khaya Moyo, who is also vying for the Senatorial seat in Bulilima-Mangwe has so far addressed rallies in Madlambuzi, Mlomwe-Bezu, Khalanyoni, Madabe and Plumtree Town.
Yesterday he addressed rallies in Sanzukwi, his home village and nearby Brunaperg in Mangwe district and today he would be in Ngwizi and Tshitshi.
Tomorrow he will be in Ngwanyana and Izimnyama.
On Thursday Cde Khaya Moyo would stretch his campaign to Umzingwane in Esigodini before going to Malaswazi and Dombodema in Bulilima district on Sunday.
From Monday up to Wednesday next week the national chairman will address rallies in Masendu, Gala, Matjinge, Nyele, Figtree and Tshankwa in Bulilima district.
In the same week on Thursday and Friday Cde Khaya Moyo would address rallies in Insiza and Matobo South.
Dr Mpofu has also addressed rallies in Binga North and South constituencies, Victoria Falls under Hwange West constituency, Hwange Central and East.
Tomorrow, he will address party supporters in Lupane before rolling the campaign programme to Bubi on Thursday. Other areas that Dr Mpofu is set to cover next week are Umguza, Nkayi and Tsholotsho district.
If the high turnout is anything to go by, Zanu-PF is set to reclaim the seats in the two provinces.
In an interview, Zanu-PF provincial chairman for Matabeleland North, Cde Richard Moyo urged supporters to rally behind the party’s candidates in the elections.
“We should not repeat the 2008 mistake, which saw us losing to MDC formations. Zanu-PF is a revolutionary party that brought independence and all the roads, clinics and schools that we have were built by Zanu-PF. MDC-T brought misery and suffering,” said Cde Moyo who is also the party’s Senatorial candidate for Bubi-Umguza.
His Matabeleland South counterpart, Cde Andrew Langa said the party was assured of a landslide victory given the benefits of its programmes such as empowerment and indigenisation.
Cde Langa said the party’s candidates in council, National Assembly, provincial council and Senate were all working together to drum up support for President Mugabe and the party.
He said the President received the highest number of votes in Matabeleland South in 2008 in the region and expressed confidence that this time the figure will even be higher.
“We are pleased to note that all our candidates are holding a series of meetings across the constituencies in the villages with some conducting door to door campaigns,” said Cde Langa.
“Given the overwhelming support for the party’s programmes such as the Land Reform, Indigenisation and Empowerment and now the Community Share Ownership Scheme/Trust, which is already bearing fruit in Gwanda, we are confident that the party will win.”
Cde Langa also said joint campaign rallies will be addressed by senior leadership such as Cdes Naison Khutshwekhaya Ndlovu, the Senate candidate for Insiza and Angeline Masuku, the Governor for Matabeleland South.
