THERE were violent clashes in Mbare yesterday between Zanu-PF and National Constitutional Assembly party supporters following a misunderstanding over places to put some campaign materials.Parties are preparing for local authority by-elections in Ward 12 set for the 25th of this month.
NCA spokesperson, Murdock Chivasa, said about 50 party supporters were sticking posters in the ward campaigning for their candidate, Takura Gadzira.
“About six of our members were putting posters on one of the corners when Zanu-PF supporters led by their candidate (Cde Maureen Nyemba) started assaulting them,” he said.
“They were seriously injured and we are now consulting with the Counselling Services Unit to see if they can be attended to.”
Chivasa said the matter was reported at Stodart Police Station in Mbare.
“We condemn what happened . . . It’s important that Zanu-PF must be serious about preaching peace,” he said.
The other candidates are Albert Muponda (MDC-T) and Jack Ethan Muzanenhamo, an independent.
Zanu-PF provincial chairperson for Harare, Cde Amos Midzi, dismissed the claims as baseless. He said no one from the revolutionary party was involved in any skirmishes yesterday.
