Zanu-PF’s dominance continues to be felt after the ruling party resoundingly won by-elections in Mangwe and snatched an MDC-Alliance council seat in Masvingo on Saturday.
According to results announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), in Mangwe constituency, the ruling party’s candidate Cde Hlalani Mguni garnered 4 553 votes, while Vincent Sihlabo of MDC-Alliance received 2 210 votes.
According to ZEC, the voter turnout in the constituency stood at 39,9 percent of registered voters. In Masvingo’s Ward 1, Zanu-PF’s Kudakwashe Murambiwa garnered 1 166 votes, while MDC-Alliance candidate Escort Chawatama managed only 334 votes.
The ruling party also put up a spirited fight in Glen View South Constituency where it lost the seat by a slim margin, as compared to last year’s general election results.
MDC-Alliance’s Vincent Tsvangirai received 3 474 votes, while Zanu-PF candidate Cde Offard Muchuwe polled 1 534 votes.
Zanu-PF Politburo member and Senator for Mangwe, Cde Simon Khaya-Moyo congratulated the party and its candidate, Cde Mguni, saying it was a “sweet victory” for the party as it continued to implement the 2018 election manifesto.
