Government has resolved to erect a national monument at the site.
In an interview yesterday, Zanu PF Mashonaland Central provincial chairman, Cde Dickson Mafios, said they had mobilised enough resources to carry out the reburials.
“We have noticed that since the place was declared a national monument, nothing has been done to rebury the fallen comrades so we have decided to carry out the reburials on our own.
“There are some in the inclusive Government who do not appreciate the role played by the liberation fighters and do not want to release resources for this cause,” he said.
Cde Mafios said they intended to start the reburials next Wednesday.
“The process will start from August 10 to August 12 and we expect delegates that will come to attend the Heroes Gala to also come and witness the reburial ceremony,” he said.
“We have received at least two cattle, maize and US$1 000 from each District Co-ordinating Committee, while each rural district council has chipped in with US$500,” he said.
Cde Mafios said the ceremony was meant to give the freedom fighters and supporters of the liberation struggle decent burial.
Thousands of former freedom fighters and villagers were thrown into the mineshaft at Chibondo by the Ian Smith regime.
The remains were exhumed early this year, led by the Fallen Heroes Trust chaired by Zanu PF Politburo member Cde George Rutanhira.
The exhumations were, however, stopped by the Bulawayo High Court following a challenge by some former Zipra freedom fighters.
