Zanu-PF has welcomed the Zimbabwe-Botswana Bi-National Commission, whose inaugural meeting ended in Harare yesterday, saying it is a confirmation of strong ties between the two nations.
In a statement, the ruling party’s Secretary for Information and Publicity, Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, said it was encouraging that the meeting focused on economic development.
“The fact that the meeting by its nature was co-chaired by the Presidents of the two countries and covered areas of diplomacy, mining and geology, health, agriculture, science and technology, speaks volumes on the focus of economic development,” he said.
Cde Khaya Moyo said the BNC was coming just before Zimbabwe hosted South Africa in a similar meeting in two weeks time.
“It is further encouraging that another BNC between Zimbabwe and South Africa will be held in Harare shortly,” he said.
“We wish both meetings tremendous success.”
Cde Khaya Moyo said it was important that the ruling parties of both Zimbabwe and Botswana maintain strong political support for such initiatives by their governments.
“Zanu-PF strongly believes that any economic thrust without political support by ruling parties of respective countries can pose a challenge,” he said.
“It is, therefore, vital that in this case Zanu-PF, the Botswana Democratic Party(BDP) and the (African National Congress) ANC of South Africa work hand in glove to support such initiatives. The parties must consolidate their existing fraternal relations and lead from the front.”
The BNC meeting between Zimbabwe and Botswana saw several agreements across a number of sectors being signed, with President Mnangagwa and President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana overseeing the signing ceremony.
The signing ceremony followed two days of deliberations by Government officials from the two sides.
