A LANDMARK women-led empowerment programme is gaining momentum in Mutare District, placing women at the centre of community development through practical, income-generating and skills-based projects.
The initiative, spearheaded by Zanu PF Manicaland Women’s League led by chairlady, Cde Dorothy Mabika in conjunction with her district coordinating committee (DCC) chairlady, Cde Loraine Mukodza, is rolling out a range of projects – beekeeping, piggery, beauty therapy, mushroom farming, fish farming and motor-related skills – designed to uplift women while remaining open to the wider community.
One of the programme’s flagship initiatives is the driving training project, launched on January 16, 2026, which has already enabled 50 beneficiaries to obtain their learners’ licences, while more participants are still undergoing training. The project also includes men, highlighting its inclusive nature.
Speaking at the ZANU-PF offices in Mutare, Cde Mabika said these were part of the empowerment drive that the league will continue to implement to empower their members.
Village development coordinator, Cde Egness Chigwada said the programme was open to all residents across Mutare District.
“Although this is a women empowerment initiative, everyone is welcome. Any resident willing to participate can join from any ward in the district,” she said, adding that its broader vision aligns with the President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s thrust to empower all citizens through inclusive development.
“This programme goes beyond driver’s licences – it is about opening up opportunities for women. Women are at the forefront of development initiatives, and everyone is welcome to participate,” she said.
Cde Chigwada also commended President Mnangagwa for placing women empowerment at the centre of national development, noting that the initiative represents a clear break from past marginalisation.
“For many years women were left behind, but today they are able to drive and hold their own driving licences,” she said.
