MEMBERS of ZAOGA Forward in Faith International Ministries (FIFMI) from across Matabeleland South gathered in Phakama, Gwanda last Sunday to mark a significant milestone in the church’s history — its 66th anniversary. The celebrations were held under the theme, “66 Years of Advancing the Kingdom of God,” bringing together worshippers in a show of unity, faith and gratitude.

The Gwanda gathering formed part of wider global commemorations taking place across ZAOGA assemblies in more than 170 countries, highlighting the church’s international reach and continued growth since its founding.

Celebrations began on May 4, with daily reflections on the church’s journey, its teachings and its impact over the years. These activities built up to the main anniversary service held in Gwanda on Sunday, creating a period of reflection for members.

The event brought together worship, teaching and community engagement, focusing not only on the church’s spiritual mission but also on its role in uplifting communities. Hundreds of congregants attended, with members travelling from various assemblies including Blanket Mine and Collen Bawn to be part of the occasion.

Activities started on Friday evening with a prayer meeting and continued throughout the weekend. By Sunday morning, the celebrations had reached their peak, with a vibrant procession through the streets of Gwanda. The procession added colour and energy to the event, as church members moved through the town singing, preaching and inviting others to take part in the celebrations.

Speaking during the event, the Resident Overseer for ZAOGA FIFMI Gwanda Province, Pastor Edzai Kahwemba, said the anniversary was an important moment for reflection and renewal among members.

“This celebration represents a spiritual journey and a time to remember the history of our church and the man who planted this vision. We continue to follow the footsteps of Apostle Guti and uphold his message of ‘Sin not and Fear not’,” said Pastor Kahwemba.

He spoke about the enduring influence of the church’s founder, Apostle Ezekiel Handinawangu Guti, whose teachings continue to guide the ministry decades after its establishment.

Pastor Kahwemba praised Apostle Guti’s commitment to faith and discipline, highlighting the values that have shaped the church over the years.

“Professor Guti dedicated his life to spreading the gospel. He taught believers the importance of prayer, living a righteous life and serving God faithfully,” he said.

The anniversary celebrations also featured guest speakers who brought messages of encouragement and guidance to the congregation. Among them were veteran bishops Langton and Ndomupei Mupanduki, who both shared their experiences and urged members to remain committed to the church’s mission.

Sunday’s programme included a standout parade through Gwanda, with more than 50 vehicles taking part. The vehicles were decorated with banners and messages such as “ZAOGA haiperi”, “The Legacy Continues” and “66 Years of Advancing the Kingdom of God.” The procession drew attention from residents, many of whom stopped to watch as congregants sang gospel songs and spread messages of faith.

Addressing worshippers, Bishop Ndomupei Mupanduki encouraged both leaders and members to strengthen their efforts in evangelism and outreach.

“Gwanda has expanded significantly over the years. When I ministered here in the 1990s, many of the suburbs we see today did not exist. Every church leader must work hard to win more souls for Christ. I also encourage members to venture into business so they can support the work of the church,” said Bishop Mupanduki.

His message reflected the church’s continued focus on growth, both spiritually and socially, as well as the importance of self-reliance among its members.

The event also drew the attention of local leadership, with Gwanda Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer Mr Ranganai Sibanda attending the celebrations. He commended ZAOGA for its contributions beyond the church, particularly in education and community development.

“ZAOGA has partnered with communities in building schools, especially in remote areas. In Ward 12, Dubane, church members constructed a school which has greatly benefited local people. Their efforts complement the Government’s vision for education and community empowerment,” said Sibanda.

His remarks highlighted the role the church has played in supporting national development goals, especially in underserved areas.

For many long-standing members, the anniversary was also a time to reflect on personal journeys within the church. One such member, church elder Mrs Gamuchirai Mavugara, shared her experience of being part of ZAOGA for over five decades.

Having joined the church in 1972 at the age of 10, she spoke about how its teachings had shaped her life and that of her family.

“I joined ZAOGA at Bhobho when I was only 10 years old. We came from a poor background, but the teachings on working talents changed our lives. Today, all my children are educated and employed. Apostle Guti encouraged us to value education and personal development. I even studied through correspondence and learned how to drive,” she said.

Her story reflected the long-term impact the church has had on individuals, particularly in promoting education, hard work and personal growth.

ZAOGA Forward in Faith International Ministries was founded in 1960 in Bindura by Archbishop Professor Ezekiel Handinawangu Guti. Over the years, it has grown into a global church known for its emphasis on faith, discipline, education and community involvement.

As the celebrations came to an end, there was a strong sense of unity among congregants. For many, the anniversary was not just about looking back, but also about renewing their commitment to the values and vision of the church.

Members said the occasion reminded them of their shared purpose and strengthened their resolve to continue working together in faith and service.
