ZB Bank outplayed competitors to amass more points in the exciting National Bankers’ Pool Tournament played at a local hotel last week on Saturday.
The tournament, which was played on a round robin, saw eight banking entities and insurance companies drawn from across the country competing in a race to three format.
The triumphant ZB Bank won seven games and lot once.
Other teams that took part in the tournament include Old Mutual, CABS, EcoBank, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, CBZ, FBC and AFC.
The intriguing tourney drew scores of pool lovers in Mutare and beyond as pomp and funfair characterised the day.
Despite a counter attraction, in the form of the Master’s Pool Tournament, which was taking place at Poshto De Froteira, about eight kilometres from the city centre, the event lived up to its billing and managed to bring the glitz and glamour usually associated with a tournament of such calibre.
All the teams that played constitute the Financial Services Pool League, which is Harare-based.
The league’s chairman, Kurai Nyembe, said: “We are excited that the tournament was successful.
We last held such a prestigious and successful tournament before the Covid-19-induced lockdown.
“The reception was also excellent and we would like to thank our hosts, the hotel and its management for ensuring that the event was a resounding success. Mutare is beautiful and we hope to come back again.”
The hosts, Golden Peacock Hotel’s general manager, Adonis Mutigwe, said: “It is an honour to be part of the hosts. Being part of this prestigious event is something that we always longed for.
“We will continue supporting such events as we aim towards partnering communities and organisations in social events such as these. As an accommodation facility, we will always be ready to host high profile pool tournaments like these in the future.”
The hotel’s management handed over accommodation vouchers to outstanding players and winners.
The event also promoted sports tourism as some of the teams managed to travel to scenic areas in and around Manicaland such as Nyachowa Falls, Mtarazi Falls, World View in Nyanga and Prince of Wales World View.
