ZBC gets pat in the back

Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs Owen Ncube has commended the national broadcaster, Zimbabwe Broadcasting Cooperation (ZBC), for opening Central Radio in Gweru.

Speaking live on radio after touring Central Radio’s studios in Gweru recently, Minister Ncube urged Gweru business people to take advantage of the new station to market their goods and services.

Minister Ncube, who was accompanied by heads of Government departments and other senior civil servants from the Midlands Province during the tour, said ZBC should show the way in decentralising radio services to the provinces.

“The new commercial radio station in the province has a wider reach and gives the people a platform to interact for development and progress and ZBC must be commended for opening it,” he said.

“ZBC took heed of the people’s plea by launching a new radio station, which is very commendable.”

The commercial radio station, which will be on frequency 95.8 comes after ZBC successfully launched Khulumani FM based in Bulawayo, which went on air on March 2.  Central Radio executive producer Mr Dumisani Sibanda said the radio station was set to provide an opportunity for socio-economic development for the people in the Midlands Province.

Central Radio will deliver programmes that focus on sport, business, industry, news and current affairs and can be heard in Kwekwe, Zhombe and Shurugwi up to about 20km from Zvishavane, Mvuma, Shangani and farming areas that include Lower Gweru and Chiwundura.

ZBC chief executive Patrick Mavhura recently said the corporation was in the process of decentralising radio to the provinces.

“The establishment of Central Radio comes after the re-branding of Spot FM to Classic 263 and this shows the continuous expansion of ZBC and reaffirms our position as a national broadcaster that is committed to fulfilling its mandate of entertaining, educating and informing the entire nation of Zimbabwe,” he said.
