ZC responds to Coltart

Commission (SRC) quarterly meeting of Friday the 1st of December 2012 discussed a proposal on national selection by the Minister of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, Senator David Coltart and endorsed that, going forward, national selection panels should be chaired by former national players.

This is not correct.
This is the relevant part of the minutes of the SRC 2012 fourth quarterly meeting held at the Jameson Hotel:
7.NATIONAL TEAM SELECTORS
7.1 The Director General was tasked to communicate to NSAs that the Minister was concerned that some of the national selectors within the NSAs did not have the credentials that would enable them to do their tasks.

7.2 Selection process was to be handled professionally.
7.3 NSAs were to have basic criteria for appointment of selectors as well as selection of national teams.

7.4 Some responses were that problems were encountered where some presidents of NSAs were involved in coaching. There was need to have clear and specific roles in order for checks and balances to happen. (Signed) Director General

The proposal was never tabled for discussion or endorsed by the national sport associations present.
If anything, ZC was, and still is, in compliance with the issues raised by the SRC Director-General, including having basic criteria for the appointment of selectors as well as selection of national teams (articles 7.3 and 7.4 above).

It is worth noting that we extracted the above from minutes we, curiously, only received yesterday morning!

The second part we want to clarify is the misinformation that we made changes to our selection policy after the 1st of December 2012. We would like it noted that there have been no changes whatsoever in the selection procedures since the 1st of December 2012, as is alleged.

The last time a ZC meeting discussed changes in the national selection panel (NSP) was on the 2nd of November, 2012.

On that day in November last year, the ZC Board considered reports on selection from the meetings of the 5th, 16th and 30th of October by its Cricket Committee.

Based on the input from that Committee, the ZC board finalised the issue by appointing Messrs Givemore Makoni and Wayne James as the two independent national selectors.
In that same meeting, Makoni was appointed as convenor of the NSP.

Thank you.
