ZC development manager, Nick Singo, said the project, which started last month, is meant to provide the platform for talented children in the high-density areas to develop their skills.
Singo said the union, which has a strong investment in grassroots development, is taking steps to tap into the talent scattered across the country.
“The idea of opening the centres of excellence in the high-density suburbs is to promote the sport in children who are unable to get a chance to play the game.
“We have identified different primary schools and other centres for cricket. We started by selecting centres in the Harare Province before moving to other provinces.
“The next province in the line is Manicaland, Masvingo, Matabeleland and finish off in the Midlands,” Singo said.
Some of the primary schools in Harare that have been selected for the establishment of the centres of excellence include Zengeza 4, Mberi, Pfumo, Glen View 3, Glen View 8, Budiriro, Mabvuku, Mwanandishe, Tsinhirano, Chiremba, Fungisai, Chinembiri and Domboramwari.
Zimbabwe Cricket has also facilitated transport to ferry the children from their schools to Old Hararians where they will be meeting once a month with 20 selected players from each school and compete for places in the schools national team. Singo also added that they want the project to spread to other schools in the high-density areas.
“We have just started this project but we would like it to spread to many schools in the high-density suburbs. We also want to expose the boys to better facilities by coaching and giving them experience of playing cricket in a different environment. The children are excited to be part of the sport,” Singo said.
