THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) Bulawayo Province is conducting a two-day “train the trainer” workshop for election officers who will train other election and presiding officers at ward level, in preparation for the forthcoming harmonised elections. The elections officers included heads of departments from different ministries.
Speaking during the workshop at Milton Junior School yesterday, the ZEC Bulawayo provincial elections officer, Mr Innocent Ncube said the training workshop was for the election and presiding officers.

“We are conducting a two-day ‘train the trainer’ workshop and we have 12 constituency election officers and two deputies for each participant, which makes them 36. The training workshop is on the management of special and postal votes as well as the harmonised elections,” said Mr Ncube.
“These officers will then train election and presiding officers at ward level. According to our programme the training workshops will be held from 23 to 25 July. The workshop is important because the officers have to be well versed with the provisions of the electoral law, processes and procedures in order for them to perform the duties in a professional manner. There will be another special group that will be recruited for the special votes as we progress towards the elections,” said Mr Ncube.

He said the electoral body would train the officers on theory and practical sides of things so that  they handle the elections in a proper manner.
“Today’s training programme is on the theoretical and tomorrow the officers will be taken for practicals where they will learn how to handle different situations during the elections.

“We are on course and the whole process is going on smoothly. We are just moving around to make sure that the material and all the other equipment required for the exercise is available during the elections,” said Mr Ncube.

On Tuesday ZEC chairperson, Justice Rita Makarau said the country had already gone through two of the three critical milestones to the election.
She said the country had already gone through the proclamation of the election date and the nomination of candidates and what was left was the polling itself.
