through two of the three critical milestones to an election and was now on the home stretch.

“You all know that in an election there are three important dates: there is the proclamation date when the election is called for, the nomination court date when candidates are selected and the last important day is the polling day and we have already gone through the first two.

“So as far as this election cycle is concerned, you can say we are two-thirds to the polling day. We have already completed two-thirds of the processes, what is left is just the last day, which is the polling day.

“This workshop is therefore important for the reason that the progress on the ground points to the inevitable conduct of elections in the near future,” she said.
Justice Makarau said the election agents had an important role to play in ensuring a transparent election.

“As political party agents, you have an onerous task to ensure that firstly you will, through your conduct, contribute to a peaceful, free and fair election, secondly to an orderly conduct of the poll, thirdly to the acceptance of results by your parties and last but not least to keeping your parties or candidates correctly informed of the goings-on at polling stations and collating centres,” Justice Makarau said.

She added that the agents had to be well versed with provisions of the electoral law, processes and procedures in order for them to report or advise on issues correctly, and also urged them to follow the code of conduct so that they are not found wanting in the discharge of their duties.
