Zemura turns to broadcasting

HIGHLANDERS FC legendary striker Zenzo “Zemura” Moyo headlines a list of Bulawayo socialites expected to captivate listeners on Skyz Metro FM. The former national team striker, whose international career took him to Cyprus in 2000, will produce and present two sports shows on Fridays and Mondays. During his Friday slot, Moyo will do soccer previews for weekend games with invited experts and will review the matches on Mondays.

Zemura, as Moyo is affectionately known, is thrilled with his new career path.

“I’m really excited about my new venture as a sports producer/presenter. I like challenges and I believe that since football has done nothing for me after hanging my boots, it’s better to share my expertise through radio,” said Moyo.

Moyo left Highlanders in 1999-2000 to join AEP Paphos Football Club in Cyprus. He was at the club for four years before joining Nicosia in the same country.

Moyo took over as the Highlanders manager after the departure of Emmet Ndlovu in 2008. He quit a year later. The ex-Bosso gangly striker was elbowed out of football by the Cuthbert Dube-led Zifa board who slapped him with a 10-year ban for allegedly being involved in fixing matches in Asia.

It’s an episode Moyo doesn’t want to comment on.

“I’ve forgotten about that ban and I’m living my life. It’s sad that my name was dragged in the mud and no one cared to get my side of the story. It’s a closed chapter and I’m looking forward to my unique shows at Skyz Metro FM. We won’t have sacred cows and we’ll tell it as it is from a professional point of view. Things that people are afraid of saying will be discussed on my shows and I promise would be listeners to brace for exciting times,” said Moyo.

Godwin Phiri, an official from Skyz Metro FM said the hiring of Moyo among other socialites is meant to give their audience “cutting edge” analysis from experts who played at the highest levels. The station is also courting veteran broadcaster Luke Mnkandla, a member of the Highlanders FC board of directors.

Popular comedian Babongile Sikhonjwa, musicians Skhu Mpofu and Sandra Ndebele, Mbo Mahocs and Gilmore “Tee” Moyo have also been allocated slots at Bulawayo’s first commercial radio station.
