Officials from the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) are heading to Mashonaland West Province to enforce the ban on the use and sell of incandescent light bulbs, as part of efforts to improve efficient use of electricity.

This comes as more than 500 shops and warehouses have so far been raided in some parts of the country, including Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, resulting in the country reducing power consumption by 12MW.

Several of those found with the energy inefficient light bulbs have been fined, while others face jail  as the energy regulator seeks to enforce a cheaper intervention to address the country’s power deficit.

Studies have shown that enforcing the ban in line with Statutory Instrument 21 of 2017 would translate to savings that are about a tenth of the more than $500 million investment in expanding Kariba Power Station in terms of energy output.
