A 27-year-old Zesa Holdings electrician was electrocuted while attending to a faulty electricity cable in Colleen Bawn as he sat precariously on a transformer cage. Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya said the incident happened on Friday at about 11.30am.

He identified the deceased as Clayton Mhlanga of Gwanda Town.
“Clayton Mhlanga was working on a power mainline servicing a standby transformer. While in the process of tightening screws at the demount, he accidentally came into contact with a live wire resulting in him being electrocuted,” said Asst Insp  Ngwenya.

Mhlanga’s colleague, Mr Bekithemba Nyathi, who was in the truck, rushed to the scene and found his workmate’s body trapped in the cage.

He alerted police and Mhlanga was taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital before he was transferred to Mater Dei                                                Hospital in Bulawayo where he died a few hours later.
