ZETDC boss suspended over power outages

ZESA Holdings has suspended Engineer Abel Gurupira, acting managing director of the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), following a series of disruptive power outages during major national events.

The suspension is directly linked to the electricity failures experienced during Tuesday’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) at Parliament and the disturbances at the commencement of the Zanu PF Annual Conference in Mutare early this month.

The suspension letter was issued by ZESA Holdings’ acting chief executive, Engineer Nyachowe, strictly advising Engineer Gurupira not to interfere with the pending investigations.

“I am hereby suspending you from duty pending investigations following a spate of power outages prior to the commencement of the Zanu PF Conference in Mutare and during the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on 28 October 2025,” said Engineer Nyachowe.

President Mnangagwa had to complete delivering his address using a torch after the New Parliament Building was suddenly plunged into darkness by a power outage.

ZETDC is a unit within ZESA and is responsible for transmitting and distributing electricity across the country.
