THE Zimbabwe Handball Federation Level One coaching course is set to get underway tonight with 50 participants taking part.

The course outline includes introduction to handball, the qualities of a coach, handball formation and nutrition of a player.

It will also focus on the basic motor skills of a player, the positioning and basically the rules interpretation of the game.

The online course is running until Thursday. It is being facilitated by ZHF technical director Farai Gwisai.

Day one will see Gwisai taking the participants through the history of handball, coaching philosophy and fair play, sports medicine and sports nutrition, handball equipment and facilities.

Tomorrow, which is day two, focus will be on handball rules and regulations, handball signs, skills in handball, handball attack and defence formations while on Wednesday they will look at planning a handball training session, referee signals and playing the game of handball.

They conclude with an assessment test on Thursday.

The course is targeting coaches that are going to take up beginners and Gwisai said they are hoping the coaches will then introduce the sport to grassroots.

Some of the participants are from Zimbabwe Open University.

“So we are targeting that these coaches will go to grassroots and introduce the game of handball.

“And the reason why we have partnered with ZOU to make sure that we always facilitate courses with them, they are the people who are going to the grassroots as the physical education teachers,” said Gwisai.
