Talented singer Tendai Kevin Zhou of ZimPraise choral group scooped four awards at the just ended ZimPraise CEO’s awards ceremony held at Rainbow Towers.Zhou walked away with the People’s Choice Award, Face of Zimpraise 2015, Best Male Voice 2013 and Best Tenor at the colourful ceremony that saw more than 10 choral members including Tembalami were honoured.
The 23-year-old musician said the awards would go a long way in developing his career.
“I feel honoured and entirely grateful to God for receiving four awards. The awards mean so much to me, above all I am reminded music is not just for me but for a whole generation that looks up to me,” he said.
Zhou said he would not go solo but would remain a member of ZimPraise.
“I will not leave the choir. There are still a lot of things that I am learning from the choir. To me being a solo artist is such a huge responsibility especially in gospel circles and it’s not just about singing but a calling,” he said.
He said the biggest challenge in the music sector was piracy.
“A lot of work is put into producing albums and music collections but artists are not able to get their deserved remuneration because of piracy in Zimbabwe,” he said.
Zhou urged other choral groups to focus on God.
“Of late, there has been a number of choral groups that are coming up. Some of the groups are making an impact in the community as well raising the country flag high but they should also focus on Jesus,” he said.
Asked where he gets inspiration, Zhou said he had several role models.
“I have so many role models that I look up to and some are not in the arts sector. I believe each person embodies a unique spirit and character,” he said.
