Following the release of “ED Pfee Riddim” at Rainbow Towers recently, Zimbabwe Congress of Student Unions (ZICOSU) who were behind the project are appealing for funds for live shows and distribution. The dancehall riddim, which features big names in the genre among them Dobba Don and Enzo Ishal, has been receiving airplay but is not well distributed on CDs.
In an interview with The Herald Insight, Zicosu member who also produced the riddim’s medley video Paul “Big Situation” Mavhima said the riddim is a way of complementing President Emmerson Mnangagwa on reaching out to young people.
“Zimdancehall has grown to be one of the most followed genres by young people since independence. We are then using it to complement our president as he spreads the message of patriotism to young people,” he said.
“We are showing the world that young artists also support the President’s vision for Zimbabwe,” said Mavhima.
Recorded at Chillspot Records, the riddim features ten artists among them Bazooka, Batman, Master H, Rider Marcus, Ronny, Jeriman, Dobba Don and Enzo Ishal.
“We also gave a chance for aspiring actors and video vixens to showcase their talent when we shot our video for the project,” said Lonias Rozvi who created the concept.
The video which was shot by Studio Art Pics under the direction of Leeroy Kandeya funded by Emmerson Mnangagwa Jr features different people imitating the president and other senior government officials.
Only funds have been limiting the young artists from expanding the reach of their riddim and message.
“We hope to get enough funds to further distribute, hold live shows as well as work on similar projects that groom patriotic artists as big as Brenda Fassie and Hugh Masekela who were instrumental in fighting repression in their country,” said Rozvi.
Zicosu hopes to continue working with artists to enlighten young people even after elections.
