travel to Harare for a meeting with Cuthbert Dube ahead of the doubtful Friday board meeting. The subject at the centre of the gathering will be to come up with a road map towards the Warriors campaign for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and 2014 World Cup qualifiers both of which start this year.
A source at Zifa confirmed yesterday that such a meeting would take place. He said only three board members would attend as they wanted to thrash out the issue of the Warriors before meeting other members and councillors at the weekend. He said it was very important that the issue be brought to the Assembly once it had been attended to by the three.
The government through the Sport and Recreation Commission wants a feedback on what Zifa were doing towards those two tournaments.
“Zifa must send a report to the SRC as a matter of urgency on their roadmap to the two finals. Government is eager to see the Warriors qualify for major events’ finals and has asked the SRC to find out from Zifa what they are doing and establish challenges being faced. The SRC wants strategy towards 2013 and 2014 because in the past Zifa have seemingly been clueless and taking these tournaments as projects to be attended to on an ad hoc basis.
“The idea is for the three to be at the same level before they meet everyone else which includes fellow board members,” said the source.
Leadership, proper planning and finances have been the biggest challenges faced by Zifa over the years. These have led to inadequate preparations and poor results for Zimbabwe’s senior soccer team. Only through the successes of the Warriors can the world get to know the country as a powerhouse in the game.
Contacted for comment Zifa spokesperson Nicky Dhlamini-Moyo confirmed yesterday that Moyo would be in Harare today.
Though she professed ignorance of the meeting, she said she was aware that he would get to the Mighty Warriors camp.
“I am aware that Moyo is coming to Harare partly to see the Mighty Warriors in camp. I am not aware that there is a scheduled meeting with the president and Gumede, which may be but I don’t have the agenda,” said Dhlamini-Moyo.
