Zifa chief executive officer Yvonne Mwana says the Normalisation Committee seeks to foster children’s mass participation in the game so as to be in line with the Fifa goals for grassroots football development.

In a wide ranging interview with Zimbabwe Television Network (ZTN), Mwana said the improvement of grassroots football was a top priority.

“The first thing we want to do is to encourage mass participation and it’s on one of Fifa’s to-do lists. So we are also clutching on to it and implementing it here. When we are talking about football and academies there isn’t a policy but we are working on a policy. We wanted to have our academies graded so that when we visit them, we ask if you have the right coaches, the right equipment,” said Mwana.

She added: “I always want to talk about something that l have done. We have been talking about the Caf Schools Championships but we are also talking about Fifa football for schools. It’s something that we are passionate about that we want to take on and make sure there is mass participation in football.”

Late last year, Zimbabwe hosted the Confederation of African Football (Caf) schools tourney in Harare as Zifa moved to improve grassroots football.

The 10-team tournament, which featured both boys’ and girls’ teams, was held over three days at Gateway High School.

South Africa emerged winners of the tournament in both categories which carried separate US$100 000 prize money. Both will advance to the continental finals to be played next year.

Zimbabwe were bronze medallists in the boys’ category while the girls failed to make it past the group stage.

The first edition was held in Malawi last year but Zimbabwe could not be part of the inaugural edition because of a Fifa ban.
