ZIFA have identified a possible candidate for the technical director’s post that was left vacant after Nelson Matongorere’s dismissal early this year.National association spokesperson, Xolisani Gwesela said yesterday the choice was still to be ratified by the board.
There were rumours that Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe had been appointed for the post. He was until recently the technical advisor of the Mighty Warriors but was relieved of the post as it was felt that he held the same qualifications with Rose Mugadza the coach. Last month Zifa advertised the post in the national media.
“Interviews were done, a name was identified. But that name has to be ratified and that process is underway,” said Gwesela.
He could not disclose the name of the identified candidate. He said Fifa would also be advised.
Gwesela said: “We also have to advise Fifa of the name. We will confirm at the appropriate time.”
Jongwe attended a workshop for employees at Mount Hampden. He wore a sticker that was written technical director and has been a regular at Zifa offices in the past two weeks occupying Matongorere’s former office.
His appointment however appears to have been met with some resistance as some board members are shocked over the procedures used to select him.
Some candidates complained that the Zifa secretariat’s email address that was on the advertisement was incorrect as messages sent were not delivered, thus they were not able to send their applications.
A board member told Chronicle last week that they were not aware that Jongwe was now part of the secretariat.
Media personnel have complained in the past of not getting any joy from the same email address too.
It is hoped that the new technical director will, apart from coach education, drive a national thrust in youth development.
