THE Zifa Southern Region Soccer League has roped in Bulawayo businessman and philanthropist Raj Modi as their patron in a move regional chairman Musa Mandaza described as key in sprucing up their image.
The league seems to have strategically appointed Modi as a way of reaching out to the corporate world. “This is the first time for our region to have a patron. Modi is a father figure, a man of the people who has been involved in other sporting activities.
“He has been active in terms of social corporate responsibility. It’s our hope that his coming in will spruce up our image to the corporate world,” said Mandaza. Modi said he was looking forward to working with the region to develop football.
Modi is expected to play a big role in the staging of an Under-20 boys’ tournament involving Zimbabwe National Youth Games champions Bulawayo and losing finalists Matabeleland North later this month.
“I’m a sport-loving man and have been involved in sport for a while. When they made a request, I accepted the offer. I greatly feel honoured by the confidence that the Southern Region has in me,” said Modi.
Zifa honorary vice-president Ndumiso Gumede was confident that through his business connections, Modi could lure the corporate world to invest in football.
The veteran administrator said the Southern Region had the potential to shine.
