Zig Zag Band, an iconic music group formed in 1982, is mourning the loss of another member.
On Monday, Steven Lunga, known as Lyan, passed away at the age of 55 at Kwekwe General Hospital after a long illness.
His death adds to the heartache that has plagued the band in recent years, leaving fans and fellow musicians grappling with profound sadness.
Lunga’s funeral took place in the Midlands Province, where friends and fans gathered to honour the man who was a vital part of the band’s legacy.
Band manager Julius Ziva reflected on Lunga’s contributions, describing him as a key figure who helped shape the band’s sound and success.
“Steve was in a league of his own,” Ziva stated.
“He was humble, God-fearing, and always brought joy to those around him.”
The Zig Zag Band is known for its rich Chigiyo music, with memorable tracks like, “Gomo Ramasare,” “Hombiro,” and “Nyarunde.”
Lunga, along with founding member Gilbert Zvamaida, played a significant role in the band’s rise to fame.
Despite being overshadowed by others, Lunga was respected for his dedication to nurturing new talent, including musicians like Ziva, Gerald Chamunorwa, Sunduzo Kosolo, and Isaac Phiri.
Ziva, who joined the band in 1989, expressed the difficulty of replacing Lunga.
“We have been robbed,” he said, acknowledging the profound impact Lunga had on the group.
“Comparing him to other keyboardists, he was in a league of his own.”
The Zig Zag Band has faced numerous challenges, including the loss of several members over the years.
Ziva recalled how he first met Lunga and the band’s evolution through various ups and downs.
“I was born and bred in Kadoma as a footballer and musician.
“I used to play for Rio Tinto in Kadoma and later signed for David Whitehead.
“I then signed for ZiscoSteel, but I had an accident in 1984, which is why I walk with the aid of crutches,” he shared.
Ziva’s journey with the band began as he followed Zig Zag Band closely as a session musician.
He easily integrated into the group after the death of some founding members.
Like many bands, Zig Zag Band faced internal conflicts, which sometimes led to members departing.
Ziva recounted: “At one point, Steve left to join The Mighty Hands, and we had to push forward with Patrian Mujeleni using the name Zig Zag Band.”
The band’s struggles have been compounded by the tragic deaths of key members, including Noel Kasirori, who was murdered in South Africa.
Ziva has worked hard to assemble a strong team, now featuring musicians like Isaac Phiri, Sundizwayo Kosolo Nyorenda, Gerald Chamunorwa, and Raphael Chigumba.
Despite the weight of loss, Ziva remains optimistic about the band’s future.
“Some of us joined this band while others left and came back, but what it means is that Zig Zag Band is an institution,” he said.
“We created a lot of memories that the older generations can relate to.
“We are still here to make memories and keep the fire burning.”
Lunga’s death has brought back memories of the band’s glory days, a time when they were a formidable force on the music scene.
His home in Amaveni, Kwekwe, has been a hub of activity as friends and fans pay their respects to the departed star.
Ziva stressed that while they mourn, they must also celebrate Lunga’s life and the impact he had on the music community.
“What I can say about Steven’s death is that we have been robbed.
“It will be hard for us to find a suitable replacement.”
As the Zig Zag Band navigates the pain of loss, they are determined to honour Lunga’s legacy and ensure that their music continues to resonate with fans for years to come.
While the shadow of death looms over them, the spirit of the Zig Zag Band lives on, reminding everyone of the rich memories they have created together.
Long live the Zig Zag Band, an institution that has touched countless lives through its music.
Though going through a turbulent moment, the band remains strong in character and has vowed to continue the vision of founding members.
