BOTSWANA President Duma Boko has praised the strong relations between his country and Zimbabwe, adding that Harare’s recent gesture of providing antiretroviral therapy (ARV) to its neighbour was commendable.
President Boko made the remarks during a meeting with Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga on the sidelines of the Sub-Regional World Children’s Day Commemorations in Gaborone. The meeting served as a platform to discuss collaborative efforts to strengthen ties.
“Firstly, I conveyed greetings from His Excellency Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, who could not attend the 2025 World Children’s Day Commemorations,” said VP Chiwenga after the engagement.
“He (President Boko) expressed gratitude for the generous donation of ARV medications, as the consequences of missing these vital medications can be severe.”
President Boko acknowledged the significant contributions of Zimbabweans living in Botswana, describing them as excellent guests who have positively influenced the country’s economy and moral fabric.
He told VP Chiwenga that while there could be some challenges, “Zimbabweans have had a substantial positive impact here”.
The discussion highlighted Zimbabwe’s eagerness to collaborate with Botswana on economic initiatives, especially as both countries navigate challenges in the diamond industry.
“Zimbabwe is keen to diversify our economy and work closely with Botswana to explore various opportunities,” said VP Chiwenga. Last month, Zimbabwe donated ARV drugs to Botswana, consisting of a 20 percent donation and an 80 percent loan, with Botswana agreeing to repay the loaned drugs in kind. The gesture is seen as reflective of the enduring bonds between the two countries, reinforcing their commitment to solidarity and mutual support in the region.
