ZIMBABWE has developed close to 17,000 housing units/serviced stands so far under the country’s economic blue-print, Zim-Asset. Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Saviour Kasukuwere said recently that the government was determined to meet housing development targets as espoused in the blue-print.
“Following the formulation of the Zim-Asset (2013-2018), which sets the housing target delivery of 125,000 units or serviced stands by December 2018, my ministry has come up with the National Housing Delivery Programme with the aim of achieving the set targets,” said Kasukuwere.
“Zim-Asset targets translate to 25,000 units/stands per annum against the national housing backlog of 1,250,000 units. The ministry then set a target of 313,368 housing units/stands to be delivered over five years by all housing stakeholders. To date, 17,137 housing units/serviced stands have been delivered.”
As such, he added, the government has assigned specific annual provincial targets for all interested parties to meet by December 2018. Bulawayo metropolitan province’s target, for instance, stands at 15,000 while that of Matabeleland North is 28,772.
Kasukuwere said Bulawayo alone has a housing backlog of approximately 110,000 as per their housing waiting list.
He said the national housing delivery programmes were centred on coordination of all interested parties and leveraging resources for human settlement development as outlined in the Zim-Asset.
“The ministry will continue to facilitate the delivery of housing in all the provinces in order to meet the Zim-Asset targets. We would like to consider making more land available to cities for housing development,” said the minister.
