Zim beat Nigeria in Davis Cup

THE Zimbabwe Davis Cup team continued with their fine show at the Group III Africa Group Round Robin matches currently underway in Cairo, Egypt. Yesterday Zimbabwe won their singles matches to take an unassailable 2-0 lead as they headed for the doubles matches which they also wrapped. Team captain Martin Dzuwa could not be reached to give finer details but reports from the Smash Tennis Academy in Cairo indicated that Zimbabwe had beaten the Nigerians 3-0.
Benjamin Lock beat his opponent 6-3, 6-3 while Takanyi Garanganga cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 victory in their doubles matches.

Mark Fynn then formed a tandem with Lock to win 6-4, 6-2 in the doubles.
In their opening matches in Pool A, Zimbabwe beat Congo 3-0 on Monday. The Congolese are founding the going tough as they also lost 3-0 to Madagascar in the other tie.
Lock, Fynn, Garanganganga, Tinotenda Chananikira and playing captain Dzuwa will meet Madagascar in crunch match hoping to maintain their winning streak and finish top of the pool.

Zimbabwe’s best performance was reaching the World Group quarterfinals in 1998, but lost to Italy after defeating Australia 3-2 away in the first round with Byron Black being the backbone of the team.
