WORLD Boxing Federation All-Africa heavyweight champion Elvis Moyo has been banned from taking part in South Africa Boxing Commission events after he took part in martial arts contests.
The Bulawayo boxer, affectionately known as “The Bomber”, has been based in South Africa for some time and took part in the Extreme Fighting Championships, a mixed martial arts competition,
He fought in a heavyweight contest against Brendon Groenwald.
Reports from South Africa indicate that the Zimbabwean boxer was suspended last week after breaching the SA boxing commission’s rules and regulations.
SABC chief executive, Loyiso Mtya, said they did not allow their professional fighters to compete in dual combat sports without their consent.
“Professional boxers are not allowed to be involved in mixed martial arts but it is not easy for us to monitor them. They fight without our consent.
“Elvis is not going to fight under us (SABC) any more. It is really a concern for us that our boxers fight in mixed martial arts tournaments where their gloves are too small.
“They use elbows, they kick when the opponent is down, they do not stop for a count. Instead, the opponent is hit when he is down.
“They are allowed to go into the next fight while still injured from their previous fight because there is no punishment index,” Mtya told the media.
