ZIMBABWE boxing continues to grow in stature and status with yet another local female pugilist Revai Madondo getting a huge opportunity to shine at the global stage after getting a shot at the World Boxing Council silver title.
The 26-year-old is scheduled to face off against Turkish age-mate Angelina Lukas in Istanbul, Turkey, on August 25 for the vacant super-flyweight belt. Modalities of the fight have since been agreed upon with Madondo set to have her last preparatory fight against Malawi’s Mphatso Metaudzo in Chivhu next Friday.
She will become only the second boxer in Zimbabwe after Charles Manyuchi to fight for a WBC silver title. Of course, bantamweight boxer Kudakwashe “Take Money” Chiwandire has had a shot at the gold stripe which she lost to Yamileth Mercado of Mexico in Chihuahua three months ago.
She had qualified to take on the holder of the belt by virtue of winning and defending the interim title last year.
And it’s now Madondo’s turn to raise the country’s flag high after getting a rare chance to fight for a WBC belt. The WBC is the best ranked boxing sanctioning board in the world and opportunities to have a go at any of their belts are hard to come by.
But Zimbabwean boxers have been doing well internationally and they are starting to get recognition.
Madondo, who is under the Delta Force Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts Academy has since started training for the big day.
Just like Chiwandire before, Madondo is being trained and managed by veteran Clyde Musonda.
She told The Herald yesterday that she is eager to seize the moment.
“You know that it is very rare for a Zimbabwean boxer to get such a huge opportunity.
“I am thrilled just to be able to get such a huge chance to fight for a WBC belt,” she said.
“I am grateful for the opportunity and I have already started preparing for what I should say is the biggest fight in my boxing career.
“I have had a chance to be with the likes of Charles Manyuchi and Kudakwashe Chiwandire who have been there before.
“Just getting to know that Manyuchi once won the WBC silver title and Chiwandire did the same when grabbing the interim title gives me some real motivation to want to do as much as they did.
“But everything lies in preparation. I am trying by all means to get into the best possible shape that I can.”
