Zim boxers head to Kazakhstan

HWANGE based boxing coach Mphilisi Moyo will accompany two boxers for a month long training camp in Kazakhstan. The training stint will be followed by a tournament. The two boxers Brighton Masiyambumbi (lightweight) and Sady Mbiza (flyweight) will be in camp from 27 September to 27 October and are expected to take part in the World Amateur Boxing Championships from 23-27 October.

However, the Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association (Zaba) has appealed to the corporate world to help with funds for a pre-departure camp in Harare.

“Tickets for the journey to Kazakhstan are already in place but we need the guys to train under one roof in Harare before they fly out hence our appeal for financial assistance,” said Zaba technical director Petros Masiyambumbi.

He said while in Khazakhstan, the boxers will be under the guidance of experienced international coaches who will also assess them to determine whether they will be fit and ready for the World Championships.

“It’s an opportunity for Moyo as well to be exposed to better equipped facilities as well as technical expertise which we hope will help our own boxing when he comes back,” said Masiyambumbi.

Brighton Masiyambumbi is ranked sixth in Africa in his division. He won a bronze medal at the Zone Six Championships in 2009 and has been a dominant force at the Zimbabwe National Youth Games.
